How to soften my P Hair?

How do i soften my pubic hair? is it normal for it to be very rough and it feels like wire. It bothers my girl friend and myself because it almost feels like your being stabbed she no longer gives me head and seldom do we have because the pain in unbearable answers quick i don't know how much longer i can go like this.
